Double Dye
The Double Dye group marks the first collection drop in the John Elliott Fall / Winter 2019 Men’s collection, titled Home. The season takes a trip up the California coastline, pulling away from a sun-streaked and arid Los Angeles and landing in the mistier, earthier Northern Bay. The collection is rooted in a nostalgic manifestation of a coastal “dream home’ - a personal narrative for John being raised in Northern California with the aspirations of ultimately building a home on the coast. The specific coastline to the region of cold water, heavy waves, cliffs affected by wind, rolling forests, all blanketed by fog became the nucleus for the fabric development for the season. With the design process drawing inspiration from both the indoors and the wild. We’re debuting a FW19 podcast series that dives deeper into our new developments for the season, including Double Dye.
The FW19 imagery was shot in Sea Ranch, CA, a coastal city a hundred miles north of San Francisco, chosen for its landscape and architecture.
Our overall approach to design is influenced by the mentality by which we create denim washes, which are individually handcrafted, innovating beyond traditional dye recipes. We’re proud to introduce a new development in jersey and French terry, Double Dye, which utilizes a labor intensive hand dye process that challenges conventional tie dye and machine dye methods. The garment is dyed, bleached out in specific areas, and then overdyed to insert color into the previously bleached out areas. There is a uniqueness with this approach that cannot be replicated, resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces. Made start to finish in Kojima, Japan, this development speaks to the core of the brand and our goal to create products with intention that age well and look better with wear.
This treatment is applied to the LS University Tee, Raglan Hoodie, Ebisu Sweatpant, and a relaxed fit Painter Pant. Two colorways tie back to the season’s inspiration, with Indigo x Black referencing the cool and rocky coast of Northern California and Grey x Pink drawing inspiration from a foggy sunrise. The offering is available now through www.johnelliott.com and the John Elliott Melrose Flagship.
